Traditionally, saunas have always been built from the fragrant Cedar wood. Not only is Cedar very appealing to look at, but it´s resistant to bacteria, mold and fungus.
Because it is a lightweight and dimensionally stable wood that lies flat and stays straight, Cedar resists cracking better than denser woods, even though it is 80% the strength of oak. Western Red Cedar will not bow or sag over time, so that a sauna made with this superior wood retains its original shape much longer than had other woods been used. Simply stated, this means your sauna will remain strong and beautiful for years.
It is important that a sauna be built with a wood that will stay cool to the touch... and cedar fits this requirement.
Solarus Saunas are constructed of Canadian Western Red Cedar, using only the heart- wood from where terpine content is low. Also, the wood has been kiln dried to around 8% moisture content to ensure against shrinkage, sanded very finely, and the residue of any sawdust removed. Only the stability, beauty, longevity, and subtle soothing aroma remain.
