Magnificent Cedar

Traditionally, saunas have been built from Cedar, not only is it esthetically appealing, but it is resistant to bacteria, mold and fungus. Because Cedar is a durable, lightweight and stable wood that lies flat and stays straight, it resists cracking better than that of denser wood. Western Red Cedar will not bend or sag over time, and therefore will retain its original shape longer than that of other woods. It is also important that a sauna be built from a wood that will stay cool to the touch allowing you to enjoy your sauna in comfort. The end result is a sauna that will remain beautiful and strong for years to come.

Solarus Saunas are constructed of select Canadian Western Red Cedar, where the wood has been kiln dried to ensure against shrinkage. The saunas have also been sanded very finely, and the remainder of any sawdust removed. This leaves you the stability, beauty, and longevity of a Solarus Sauna.

*Fact: Cedar was famously used in constructing King Solomon's temple in Jerusalem.

Basswood

Solarus has chosen hypoallergenic basswood as an alternative wood

for the small portion of the population that has an allergy to cedar. The majority of reactions to any wood are from the wood dust, which is mostly absent in all Solarus Sauna units.

Basswood is a light colored wood that contains almost no smell. It is mainly grown in the Northern and Lake States, and was traditionally used by the Native Americans to make rope, thread, and fibers.

Many sauna companies use Poplar wood to build their saunas, however, unlike Cedar and Basswood it has a tendency to warp and twist, making it a poor choice for a high quality sauna, such as those of Solarus Saunas.
