"It's important to understand the benefits of sweating," says Greg Patterson, founder and owner of Solarus Sauna. "It has excellent effects on the body."

Infrared effects on the body have been studied since the 1950s, when it was discovered that people absorb and resonate infrared energy at about 9.6 microns, within the range of what's referred to as far infrared. "Without far infrared energy there would be no plant life," Patterson says. "It's very important for all aspects of life."

Scientists believe we carry 150 to 175 chemicals in our blood because of the environmental exposure to chemicals. These chemicals eventually create a toxic load, causing our immune systems to start shutting down. "Far infrared heat energy penetrates and mobilizes a lot of these toxins out of our fat stores." Patterson says.

On the opposite end of the scale is ultraviolet energy, which can be dangerous. "However, far infrared energy," Patterson says, "is not only very safe, it also has a lot of spin off benefits." Typical saunas use convection heat to raise the air to temperatures as high as 200 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Solarus infrared cabins heat to about half that temperature - 90 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit - which is not only more comfortable but it is also safer. "It's the ideal range for detox," says Patterson. Using zirconium ceramic elements filled with crystalline silica quartz, Solarus heat emitters provide a gentle heat that actually works at a lower temperature to provide deeper infrared penetration, helping to rid the body of toxins.

Athletes in Europe have long understood the benefits of using an infrared sauna both before and after exercise. Before exercise, it allows them to stretch their muscles more effectively. After exercise, athletes use the sauna to sweat out the buildup of lactic and uric acids produced during exercise. "More and more doctors are realizing that an acidic environment leads to inflammation," Patterson says. "If we can shift our body pH into the alkaline we can definitely improve our body's ability or reduce inflammation and improve performance and health." Infrared saunas, along with healthy diet and exercise, are a big part of this paradigm of health.

"It's an old way of thinking that you need a big room for a sauna," says Patterson. Solarus saunas are available in sizes as small as 36 by 36 inches and can easily fit into the corner of almost any room. All Solarus cabins are made of select Canadian cedar or basswood and are of therapeutic quality.
